Kia which is South Korea’s 2nd largest automaker doubled its sales in the US between January to July 2024. This surge in sales has to be credited to Kia EV9 SUV. Based on the reports from Korea Automobile and Mobility Association, Kia’s EV sales amounted to 33,957 units. This is a considerable increase from 16,941 units sold last year.
What makes it noteworthy is the fact that the EV market in the US witnessed only a 0.9% growth during this stipulated time-period. This means the sales figures increased to 644,752 in contrast to 638,716 units sold last year. The Kia EV9 SUV has been the chief driver of increase in EV sales in the US market.
From January to July, the EV9 accounted for 34% of overall EV sales in the country. This translates to 11,486 units of the EV9 SUV alone. Because of the surplus sales of brand Kia, the Hyundai Motor Group has a double digit market share in the US. For the time period between January to July – Hyundai Motor Group reached a 11.1% market share making it the highest ever in the group’s history.
Kia has significantly increased its portfolio of EVs, hybrids, and plug-in hybrid models. Kia’s EV lineup accounted for 44.5% of the total eco-friendly vehicles sales. Out of the 76,393 vehicles sold by Kia, 33,957 were EVs. This means that EVs alone accounted for 44.5% of vehicle sales, and this is a significant increase (double) from last year’s figures.
