Hyundai Ioniq 9 likely to make a debut at Los Angeles Auto Show

Reports suggest that Hyundai is in the final stages of testing its much awaited Ioniq 9. The South Korean auto giant has recorded tremendous EV growth and the Hyundai Ioniq 9 is in the pipeline for a launch in Q1 2025. Despite the fluctuations in EV sales observed by a vast majority of carmakers, Hyundai Motor Group has seen a steady growth in its sales of EVs across the globe.

Besides the Ioniq 9, the Group is also planning to introduce the Kia EV 4. However, based on reports one can expect the Kia EV 4 to come only in the spring of 2025. Hyundai Motor Group is the second best selling electric car brand only after Tesla in the second quarter of 2024. The group recorded a 74% year-over-year growth in EV sales. Credit for these record sales goes to the E-GMP based models (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6, EV9).

Hyundai Motor Group future launches

To strengthen its EV portfolio, HMG will heavily rely on both the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV 4. Earlier during the launch of the Kia EV 9, there were speculations that Hyundai would name its equivalent as the Ioniq 7, based on the Seven Concept, but the carmaker decided to name it the Ioniq 9. There are hints that the Hyundai Ioniq 9 will be the company’s flagship model and give room for smaller Ioniq 7 or 8 to be developed.

Expect the Ioniq 9 to feature the same E-GMP platform and will come in a three-row offering with a powertrain similar to the EV9. Reports reveal that Hyundai has been testing this model since March and inspecting the quality. On the other side, sister brand Kia has teased images of the EV4, but it is unclear whether it is a hatchback or a sedan, or a mix of both. Based on the images one can sense an angular fastback-esque version of the EV6.

The latest offering from Kia will be positioned above the Kia EV3 and the brand will look to emulate the success of the EV3. Kia has made major strides in the US market thanks to the success of the Kia EV9. Hyundai would like to replicate that success with its upcoming Ioniq 9 and will begin production at its “Meta Plant” which is outside Atlanta.
