Sustainability and EVs – Are they Planet savers?

by AatoMobil

There are always criticisms and accolades concerning vehicles, with sustainability and EVs not being an exemption. What, however, is the real answer, are they green or not? The following describes the benefits and issues of EV in a green fashion.

Earthy Advantages Of Sustainability and EVs

Electric cars can be said to have zero tailpipe emissions, one of the many such aspects or benefits one can mention of those vehicles. Unlike the more common cars which are powered by petrol or other fossil fuels, electric cars use electric power limiting the environmental emissions of greenhouse gases. The use of such energy as wind or photovoltaics (solar powered cars) to charge cars substantially improves the situation even more. Furthermore, the introduction of Electric vehicles also leads to the availability of cleaner air since the application of such vehicles removes some harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter that are often emitted by vehicles.

Challenges: It Includes Battery Production And Recycling

Certainly, advantages such as zero emissions of harmful gases seem to come without costs in the form of challenges. For instance, in order to manufacture the bulk of today’s sustainability and EVs, especially when it comes to the production of Lithium-ion batteries, there is the requirement of massive amounts of raw materials such as; lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Despite that these materials are only available in limited amounts, they are used for manufacturing such devices and the act of extracting them could be detrimental to the environment in terms of causing habitat destruction and water contamination. Also, there is a problem of battery disposal. Batteries in electric vehicles are almost 100% recyclable, but recycling them is not practiced widely making recycling of them hard. The good news is the recycling of batteries is being researched to recover precious materials and protect the ecosystem.

Conclusion

Though Sustainability and EVs have many outlooks in terms of green aspects and especially in the emission reductions during charging, the real process of charging surprisingly emphasizes that it will depend on how the processes improve battery production and recycling. The switch from combustion engines to electric mobility is another essential aspect of sustainability, but it cannot be considered inclusive without the strategic inclusion of power, co-equal disposal mechanisms, and viable delivery systems.
