Volkswagen began the series production of its ID.5 EV and ID.5 GTX EVs at its Zwickau factory. VW’s Zwickau plant is now a dedicated EV manufacturing facility. The official production of both the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX has begun. VW has announced that its Zwickau facility has become a fully dedicated EV manufacturing facility. This plant is the first of its kind large-scale facility to switch entire production from IC engines to electric.

Earlier, VW unveiled ID.5 EV last year. The design was inspired by VW ID.4 and comes in three variants – Pro, Pro Performance, and GTX. The variants will come with different powertrains. The ID.5 is based on the company’s dedicated EV architecture MEB. The other trims, Pro, and Pro Performance come with rear-mounted electric motors. The Pro variant generates a power of 171 hp while the Pro Performance creates a power of 201 hp. The Pro variant can sprint from 0-96 km/h in 10.4 seconds, the Pro Performance can do it in 8.4 seconds.

The ID.5 Pro Performance variant claims a range of 520 km on a single charge. The Zwickau plant where the ID range will be assembled has a production capacity of 3,00,000 vehicles. This makes it the most efficient EV manufacturing facility in Europe. Christian Vollmer, who is a Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Brand said: Volkswagen will continue to increase the pace of electric mobility in 2022 with its Accelerate strategy.
